La Caméra du Flâneur

LA CAMÉRA DU FLÂNEUR

The term flâneur comes from the French and has the meaning of "vagabond", "vadio", "lazy", which in turn comes from the French verb flâner, meaning "to walk."

Charles Baudelaire developed a meaning for flâneur of "a person walking through the city in order to experience it". Due to the duration of the use and theorization by Baudelaire and countless thinkers in economic, cultural, literary and historical terms, the idea of flâneur has accumulated important meaning as a reference to understand urban phenomena and modernity. Walter Benjamin describes the flâneur as a product of modern life and the Industrial Revolution, unprecedented, a parallel with the advent of tourism. Benjamin became his own example, noted the social and aesthetic during long walks through Paris.

The perception of the flanéur seems to be in the face of what is transient in the city, but he does not simply regret transience, he feeds on it, he formulates a kind of shelter in the womb of chaotic urbanity - well understood, chaotic for the citizens, not to the political managers of the new social order - weaving a narrative of the attractions of the city, in a kind of recognition of the erotic appeal of things and people in the context of modern disagreements.

The flanêur initially serves a bourgeois individual need to overlap with the aristocracy and will become an instrument of the masses themselves, due to their prominence in the genre inaugurated by the city observer.

The photographer is an armed version of the solitary walker reconnoitering, stalking, cruising the urban inferno, the voyeuristic stroller who discovers the city as a landscape of voluptuous extremes. Adept of the joys of watching, connoisseur of empathy, the flâneur finds the world ‘picturesque.
